Problem based learning is absolutely a teaching method that can work well with Common Core, in both math and ELA. In math, there should be a balance between conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application. Problem based learning fits into the application standards. Also, one of the Standards for Mathematical Practices, Modeling with Mathematics involves real world application of mathematics. This fits in perfectly with problem based learning.
