In preparation for Common Core, our school administrator has insisted all teachers use the Reading and Writing workshop models for teaching Language Arts. I'm not against trying something new, but each year the 4th graders in my class show tremendous growth in reading and writing using some of my own tried-and-true methodsWhy throw out the baby with the bath water? If the end result is the same, and I address all the Common Core standards, what difference does it make what method I use to teach? It seems to me, the worst thing we can do to our students, is to force their teachers to teach in a way that is not familiar or comfortable.

      Hi Jane,
      It's important to note that the standards themselves do not describe how or what to teach. From the CCSS introduction, "By emphasizing required achievements, the Standards leave room for teachers, curriculum developers, and states to determine how those goals should be reached and what additional topics should be addressed. Thus, the Standards do not mandate such things as a particular writing process or the full range of metacognitive strategies that students may need to monitor and direct their thinking and learning. Teachers are thus free to provide students with whatever tools and knowledge their professional judgment and experience identify as most helpful for meeting the goals set out in the Standards." (p. 4)

      It is well worth reading the Key Design Considerations in the Introduction to the standards to learn how the standards are different, and to consider possible implications for instruction.
