In preparation for Common Core, our school administrator has insisted all teachers use the Reading and Writing workshop models for teaching Language Arts. I'm not against trying something new, but each year the 4th graders in my class show tremendous growth in reading and writing using some of my own tried-and-true methodsWhy throw out the baby with the bath water? If the end result is the same, and I address all the Common Core standards, what difference does it make what method I use to teach? It seems to me, the worst thing we can do to our students, is to force their teachers to teach in a way that is not familiar or comfortable.
