As a district that is fully engaged in implementing a balanced literacy approach to literacy instruction, authentic independent reading with "just right" books is the foundation for Readers Workshop. It is critical for students to not only assume greater ownership of their learning (and growth as readers!) with books they wish to read but more importantly, to develop and enhance their intrinsic motivation for wanting to read other then because they are told they have to with text that has little if no interest and context to them individually. At its core, nothing brings me greater personal satisfaction than hearing students bemoan the end of independent reading as they plead with their teacher to give them more time to read!
