What are some creative, innovative, practical ways to teach elementary maths to elementary kids?

      Tracy,
      Mental math is so important and useful in every day life! Have you heard of front end addition? For example, if you are adding 34 + 51, you break it up into 30 + 50 and 4 + 1, to make 80 and 5 which make 85. Or numbers where you would otherwise have to "carry a one" like 34+ 59, which you would break into 30 + 50 and 4 + 9 which makes 80 and 13, which add to 93. Adding on to multiples of 10 tends to make mental math a bit easier.

      For younger kids, finding double numbers in real life is fun. For example: eyes (1+1 =2), fingers (5 + 5 = 10). From there you can move on to all the doubles, and then doubles plus 1 if appropriate.
