Question Detail

Jobs and Classroom Community

I often see teachers using a jobs board to make students feel involved in the classroom. My question is how do you keep the rotational flow of jobs consistent, but also make sure that the same student does not get the same job every day week etc. Do you change the jobs by day or by week?

We change jobs every week. Because I teach in a special education class, some jobs rotate to all students. But some are more tailor-made to specific students based on their disabilities. But everyone has a job, even if they have to work with a partner. We keep all of this organized on our smart board.

I have seen it done several ways, depending on the grade that you teach. One of the best ways was a 4th grade class. There were enough jobs for every student and they 'applied' for the jobs they wanted. They had to write a 2 paragraph paper stating why they wanted the job and why they would be good at it. The teacher then assigned jobs for a school quarter. Next quarter, the process would be repeated. The students loved it!
