Question Detail

Looking for ways to integrate ELA standards into my Science and Social Studies lessons.

This year I was told to implement the current ELA writing and reading standards into my teaching. I am a 7th grade Science and Social Studies teacher. I am having problems finding ways to implement these standards, and teach my spi's at the same time. Any help will be appreciated.

Any other suggestions you can give me to incorporate ELA standards into STEM would be helpful.

I use current newspaper articles that are relevant to the topic to incorporate the common core standards into my science lessons. Last week my 8th grade students used this article http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/18/how-physical-fitness-may-promote-school-success/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 to write a persuasive essay. They needed to summarize and cite evidence from the text to try to persuade the reader that there should be more physical activities during the school day. Students also had to demonstrate how steps of the scientific method were used throughout the article. I devote at least three days to these types of lessons so students have full understanding.

I have found that the program called Readworks (free to register and use ) has been great. It has the lexile of the passage and questions also. I do a vocabulary sheet consisting of words from the text and then have students do two column notes and a summary...these are short and are content driven.

The Common Core ELA standards emphasize analysis and evidence. You could have students analyze scientific claims and reports by assessing the quality of the evidence, potential bias, etc. In other words, high-quality scientific reasoning supports the very skills emphasized in Common Core.

            Here are a few resources:

            - See a video on Common Core ELA in the context of sustainability content: https://vimeo.com/62954383

            - Download sample lessons with the rigor needed to support the ELA standards:

            Hope this is helpful!

Research is another great way to integrate. As Julia said, use current events as a starting point and have the students analyze them, then respond with their own opinions/ideas. You could also have them use the design thinking process (a great overview http://www.designthinkingforeducators.com) to come up with a solution to an existing problem/issue in the world.
