Middle School Classroom Behavior - What specific classroom and behavior management strategies are most successful in your classroom?

I will be in the classroom beginning this fall, middle school math, and looking for ways to engage my students, but also keep disruptions at bay. What are the strategies that really work?

        Learn about Universal Design for Learning (UDL). It's a framework that will allow you to manage your classroom by engaging students in all aspects of the learning process, encouraging community and collaboration, and providing enough choice that students are all working in their zone of proximal development. I wrote a book about the UDL framework, which focuses specifically on setting up a UDL classroom. You can read some of it for free on Amazon.

          We use a lot of PBS (positive behavior support) in our classrooms that reinforce positive behaviors. Basically, we point out things that kids are doing well, and kids who aren't necessarily on track tend to adjust their behaviors. Kids love being recognized for doing something well/correct.

            If you can get a hold of a book by Lee Canter and Marlene Canter called "Behavior Management in the Middle School Classroom", you will get chock full of tips and info to prevent and resolve problems.

              I bought a book by Harry Wong on Procedures (the accompaniment to his other book "The first Day of School"). It has helped me to develop procedures for how the kids are to do things (enter the room, get my attention, leave the room, turn in papers, etc). We practice them often the first few days of school. The kids know what I expect and they know how to meet those expectations.

              Be sure to come up with a way to get their attention and be firm on how they are to respond at the signal.

              Have a sample problem or math riddle for the students to begin when they first walk in, this gives you time to take attendance and catch your breath while they are already engaged in learning.

              The other thing that has helped is to place my ADHD student who is a wiggler in the back row corner seat. this way he can stand, wiggle, and shout with out disrupting other students as much. It also helps that his table mate is very calm and can deal with the constant motion and occasional outburst.

                Classroom teaching, is only effective if a student wants to take advantage of it. An alarming number of unmotivated elementary and middle school children do not. Unless motivated, students are unlikely to embrace the learning process or participate in tutoring, homework help or other types of traditional mentoring programs.
