Question Detail

My district has been without an ELA textbook since Common Core was introduced. We have been pulling teaching materials from Teaching Channel and othr on-line sources. I teach 8th grade English - what text book are you using or what do you recommend? We will be adopting a text this year, and the two choices on the table are Study Sync and Houghton Mifflin Connections.

We have not adopted a text book since 2001, so we want to know what others are using.

We looked at Connections and thought it was beautiful, but it didn't incorporate sufficient instructional strategies, and the assessments weren't well-aligned with Smarter Balanced. We adopted SpringBoard, and, while no text is perfect, it has a high level of rigor, implements best practices, scaffolds the learning, spirals back to content needing reinforcement, includes aligned quizzes and assessments, has a great deal of supplemental material (including reading/writing workshops), and the company is wonderfully responsive to teacher input. In fact, a revised version is coming out fall of 2017 (2018 copyright) that sounds as if it will enhance many of the areas in which teachers were asking for change.
