Question Detail

Our distict is looking to pilot an ELA coaching model. We have never used coaching before and need to develop a job description - one that would involve teaching part time and coaching part time. Any suggestions or tips about how to frame it or what to include? Many thanks.

Katie's idea are great for what to include include in the coaching description. I worked as a half time teacher (grade 5 or 6) and half time coach for three years, but now I just coach. I have a few thoughts:
      (1) One of the powerful parts of that model is that you have your classroom that can be used for demonstration. Another teacher can watch what you do, learn from it and then try it with your active support. Use your classroom as a vehicle, almost a lab site, for some of the modeling.
      (2) Make sure your coaching role is manageable in the number of people that you are directly coaching. You'll need to be visiting regularly during student contact time and have coaching conversations with your teachers without students around. It might be as few as 2 people at a time and maybe up to about 5, depending on the depth of support.
      (3) Schedule prep time for your teaching responsibilities and for your coaching responsibilities.
      (4) Be flexible and realize that it will evolve as you do...

Thank you Katie - very helpful! I think a big challenge will be balancing the time for coaching with regular teaching responsibilities.

Thank you Heather. I like the idea of thinking about planning time for coaching as well as teaching and the classroom as lab.

You got me thinking, so I did a little more research on this. I wrote a blog summarizing a lot of the research. Maybe it will help???
