I think portfolios are valuable when you ask students to put all formative writing assessments in the portfolios, and monthly, I asked my students to pull those formative pieces out and revise. This would allow them to refine the same piece 5-6 times throughout the year and then write a final reflection about how much they saw growth in their own writing throughout the process. It's remarkable to see the evolution from the beginning to the end of the year.
