Problem Solving Student Ideas?

Mar 15, 2014 10:32am

I am creating a unit where my students have to problem solve. I want it centered on issues that effect them personally. Some examples I have come up with include bullying, dealing with parental divorce, drugs, peer pressure, abuse, etc. I would really like some help in figuring out specific topics and what books (middle school approved) I could use. I have so many idea, but I just need some help centering. I am a student teacher currently. Thank you for your help.

Perfect. How you described your unit is VERY similar to mine. I was thinking of having them read a book in lit circles in addition to a read aloud (probably an article). I feel like I am trying to fit too much into this unit and taking out the books and assigning them articles would be much easier. Could I have them do the research on the articles for their topic? I have several webpages I have already flagged for them to check out. Thank you for your help!

        Learning by doing.

let me share one example :

Kuldeep Dantewadia is CEO & co-founder, Reap Benefit

He spent six months understanding the garbage economy. “I found that there were a lot of behavioural issues,” he says, politely referring to our habit of not disposing of garbage correctly.

Reap Benefit has engaged with 85 educational institutions, and 25 companies and NGOs. They have also developed a low-cost sanitation system from discarded plastics, created a computer program that saves energy use, and created Degrade and Upgrade, affordable organic enzymes which convert waste into compost. They claim to have saved about 2,100,000 litres of water, been instrumental in diverting 200,000 kilos of waste and saving 200,000 units of power.

This is just example. garbage is issue in India and other developing country.

So let kids engage to find social problems.

let them help to go out from the classroom and help them to think out of the books.

Help them to find reason why do they need education and study.

            check out this movie

A young teacher inspires her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school.

I think that having them research the articles make perfect sense. Also, since they are shorter, they can practice close reading. Also, supplementing the articles with web pages adds a different dimension which is great for diverse learners. (:
