Subitizing is quick and automatic "knowing" the amount of a small quantity of objects. Young children can subitize approximately the amount of their age. They do not need to touch and count, rather can "see the amount" and know. It is an essential foundation in number sense and to composing and decomposing numbers. This is how students know the amount rolled on a die without counting. It is built through practice and discussion in quick flashes of quantity: How much did you see? How did you see it? and is verified with touch and count. Students subitize in regular formations and scattered formations as well as in five frames, ten frames or on rekenreks. All of this builds deep conceptual understanding of number.
