In the spirit of Universal Design for Learning, is there any way you could survey the students before the summer begins? If you knew the students who were attending, you could send out a little survey to figure out the interests of the group. They would probably love to give input and you could begin to get them excited about the program. Then, you could choose an author for study or a theme that would engage all the students. It always surprises me how the interests of different groups of kids changes from year to year.

      Good luck,

Change is the theme I will be developing through a two week summer school course for a combination class of incoming and outgoing fourth graders. We will focus on non-fiction text about the development of the transcontinental railroad, which is a topic in the California social science curriculum. We will integrate some motivating fictional stories from multicultural points of view, chants, maps, drawing, primary sources, and thinking organizers to process the theme.
