Swear words in Creative Writing?

Mar 20, 2013 3:15pm

I sometimes have students in my Creative Writing class who will put swear words in their writing. It's a little awkward when they read their poems out loud, so I'm wondering if I should make a strict no vulgarity rule. At the same time, it is a Creative Writing class and I want them to feel free to express themselves. What do others do?

Hi Rebecca, I wonder if you could find some kind of medium ground, depending on your school's policies. For example, swear words in a daily journal, not to be read out loud are ok, or replacing the actual words with things like &%$! . In either case, setting limits to what students can read out loud to the class is probably a good place to start.
