Teaching dystopia: Any help/suggestions out there?

Dec 8, 2013 5:31pm

Hi everyone, I am teaching a grade 11 English course and want to do a unit on dystopia. My students are really into the genre but I have no experience teaching it and no resources. Any help/suggestions out there? Thanks, Jesse

Really? My students are only into dating, food, fashion, and entertainment, in that order. Use your prior knowledge of teaching mechanics to scaffold into teaching the genre. Decide what your overall goals and objectives are, and develop lessons that adhere to standards. The material will take care of itself.

Don't discount the old time radio sites of Escape, Mercury Theater, Mystery in the Air, Inner Sanctum...these were great shows and you can often get the scripts for them online...my students really enjoy listening to them...

On Prezi, there is a great Dystopian presentation by Arik Durfree. Here is a link to the copy I made. It is a great way to teach the basics of dystopian literature and provides a framework for what to look for as you read.
