Question Detail

Teaching numbers 4/5 year old children

Feb 20, 2015 9:26am

I am not a professional teacher. However I am helping poor children who have no opportunity to go to school. I want to find innovative methods to teach 4/5 year olds, numbers. 1 to 10 was easy. I used playing cards for recognition of numbers 1 to 10. How make them understand numbers 11 to 20, 21-30 & so on? These children being poor have limited access to computers and other fancy teaching aids.

As an activity you could have them create number books where they have to write the number and draw a certain number of objects (simple ones like dots, lines, stars, hearts, etc) or use small stickers if you have access to them.

Playing cards is a great start. It helps with understanding if you have children place an object on each image (pebbles will do) as they count so that they have physical memory of what the numbers mean.
To teach teen numbers, display a 10 card plus any card from 1-9. Help children see that teen numbers equal ten plus another number. You can continue in the same way for greater numbers, always using multiple 10-cards as the starting point. You can also make cards that represent 10 with ten-frames. If you have access to technology yourself, take a look at this youtube video for ideas.
