When I read the Common Core Foundational Standards, I was pleased. Some methods, like the Montessori method, begin with letter sounds. There are many standards addressing phonological awareness and phonics while letter names are only mentioned once in the kindergarten strand.

      For example...
"CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3a Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant."

Because the CCSS do not come with a scope and sequence, the Montessori method and other phoneme-fist approaches support the standard expectations.
