I like to have groups of students who do not sit together complete a task together using technology. So for example, create and share with 4 "random" students a file in Google Docs, and have them work out a problem, write a story in turns, or any type of collaborative effort to reach a solution or finished product. Each can type independently and the color coding shows who produced what, and it allows me to roam the room with my tablet and monitor who is working, and check into groups' progress. It's amazing how quickly students get on task when they see "are we sure we're putting our best effort into this?" appears in the middle of their screen, typed real time by me!
Here are a couple of websites that you might find helpful. They seemed to have some very good information. I hope you find these helpful.
