THE SITUATION While you’re in the middle of teaching a lesson from the front of the room, one student stands up, looks across the room at another student and says loudly with anger, “Mr. X, you’d better tell her to stop eyeballing me or she’s gonna regret it’!” The other student keeps her eyes on you, smirks, and shakes her head in a “whatever” sort of way. Students around the room look at you with anticipation. 1. To the best of your knowledge (and without soliciting help from any resources), what do you think an effective manager should AVOID when faced with your dilemma. What are TWO plausible ways an ineffective teacher/manager might react? Why do you see these as ineffective? 2. To the best of your knowledge (and without soliciting help from any resources), what do you think an effective manager SHOULD do when faced with your situation and why.

      If I were on an island...I would quietly pull the student that verbally initiated the negative interaction out into the hallway. That particular student had the courtesy to refer to you as "Mr," so that would likely imply a certain amount of respect. Additionally, if the aforementioned student really wanted a physical confrontation then they wouldn't have even put you in the middle of it. They would have just attacked...Once you have left the remainder of the class with a task, calmly take the other student out into the hallway and then try to "talk them down." Then repeat with the other student in an attempt to diffuse the situation and not show favoritism. Either way- Counselors, administrators, and other team members should be informed of the situation. I would avoid yelling or verbally correcting either student in front of their peers (if possible).
