what advise do you give a mentor who is finding her mentee to be un-professional in the way she speaks about the school district and things she doesn't agree with? How can she tactfully address this?

during a recent in service the mentee spoke out to the PD that the district was doing things wrong and all this was a waste of time.

      As a mentor, here are a few ideas:

      1. Role play, where the mentee is on the receiving end of unprofessional criticism. (Nothing too harsh, just safely unprofessional and constructive.) If the mentee has a good sense of humor, she, or he might get the point. If they don't have a good sense of humor, I wouldn't try this idea.

      2. Safer: Watch a video where constructive criticism is shared. Mentor and mentee can view critically and discuss their ideas. During the discussion, the mentor can gently steer the mentee to consider the benefits of professional decorum.

      3. Google educators who've been fired due to their unprofessional behavior with colleagues and share these finds along with an opportunity to discuss alternative ways of sharing ideas with others.


      4. If your district has regulations and protocols for professional behavior, they should be shared as a way of helping the mentee develop professionally.

        In my opinion, you have to talk about it. Say what do you think and listen carefully for the feedback. Also, ask to explain why she speaks in such way, maybe she has some reasons? Good luck

          I've actually encountered a participant in a PD/workshop session who felt liberal at expressing her opinions regarding some strategy during the session. What I would do with this colleague is either talk face to face or put it in writing that if this colleague is taking away from the time that the facilitators are doing their job then this person is not within their bounds to say anything. This person must consider that there are other people in that meeting/workshop who probably don't know any "better" and they are there to learn. I would also encourage this person to volunteer as part of some PD committee to share "better" ideas and if someone expresses their opinion about what your mentee facilitates then this person might realize how inappropriate their actions are while facilitating.
