Question Detail

What are some creative tactics or methods in dealing with non-compliance among high school students? Teenagers are known for being willful and I have witnessed some very intense behavior at some of my local high school. I am concerned about neutralizing the situation to avoid involving the parents or principle unnecessarily. My thought is there has to be some methods to deal with vulgar language, leaving without permission or other forms of disrespect?

I wonder if there is a way to offer them more freedom/flexibility in the beginning of the year/semester to off set some of the need for pushback from students. Can you have them come up with ways to come together as a group respectfully, as well as consequences they believe are fair if they are disrupting the group? In my experience, when teens are treated like young adults and given responsibility and freedom, they are able to be more mature in a given setting.
