I always ask students to write me a letter about why they should be my favorite students. It gives you a quick diagnostic about their writing ability and it also introduces you to their hobbies, interests, etc... Throughout the year, you could ask students to begin to translate their letter into Spanish.

Here are a list of quick community building ideas that can be done with any group.
The line game. Write some true false statements that might reflect some things about the students. The students step up to the line when the statement is true about them. You learn about your students and they will see how much they have in common.
Another is the tallest tower. There are many versions. Google instructions. Its a great team building activity.
