It's also fun to have students act in first person as a character from a book they've been reading. Students discuss their books in groups in the persona of the main character and search for ways in which they had similar experiences. This helps students see big patterns in literature such as the coming of age, the quest, dealing with a problem, fear, truth vs. perception/disillusionment, and fall from grace themes (especially for advanced learners!).

My friend's school does a pajama day where kids bring pillows and just get to read all day in the gym (classroom would work too). Books are the student's choices, but the teachers have some available if needed. They have fun snacks and take breaks to share about what they chose to read and log how many pages they read as a school in that one day.

I like to set up stacks of books on tables and have the kids take a book tour. They get to see at least a dozen books and constantly get to rotate as I read some of my favorite passages from my favorite books and ask them questions for a contest.

Thanks so much Katie. What a great suggestion. I reference your videos often for staff members at my school. Thanks for all you do!!!

What about movie clips of great literature hour for the first day. Then have the books out for students to check out and read. At the end of the week, students can go see the movie that they read about and write a comparison essay.
