This is a great question -Engaging students in research is ideally fun and meaningful but it requires quite a bit of teacher commitment . A favorite site I discovered last year when I was researching authentic, real world sites is -http://www.jfklibrary.org/Education/Teachers.aspx

Although so many students struggle with critical analysis of informational text, and need research mentors and feedback-The JFK Library , offers aspiring educators, educators working to scaffold team members or align proficiency measure.

My students formulate a question that can be tested through experiment or survey. They must research and cite sources before generating hypotheses. I am always excited to see the questions they propose through with this freedom. A research question from last year: How does student behavior affect school achievement scores?

The experiment/survey is performed, data analyzed, conclusions drawn, and results presented. ELA standards are the focus of the project but obviously it is works across the curriculum. The students create a display board and write an Abstract.
