Lead the students from understanding simple simile and metaphor. Once they start reading in between the lines, the sense of grasping unsaid words increases.
For eg, His hands were limp like the noodles.
A first grader answered that he had noodles all over his hand. As the attention was drawn to the words, limp like a noodle, the students made a gesture of handling hand and then said, "oh it had no strength".
Such sentences leads the students to the analytical approach.
Can you be more specific with what you mean by analyze sentences? Do you want them to analyze for grammar, or word choice, or general structure, etc.?
