Question Detail

What are some ideas for balancing direct instruction with my "neediest" English Language Learners and instructional coaching with content area teachers in a large high school?

Over 20% of our school's student population has a first language other than English, so the need for instructional support is everywhere. Also, it is my first year in my high school, so I'm trying to prioritize.

Thank you for your thoughtful response Jasmine. Right now I'm assigned to 3 inclusion classes in addition to my 3 ESOL Enrichment classes. As I'm getting to know my inclusion teachers, I am working to co-teach as they will allow (at least in 1 of the classes). If the teacher is not open to co-teaching, I'm giving them ideas for incorporating strategies that are good for everyone. I'm hoping that next year I can start coaching more outside my inclusion classes. I can use your suggestion as I'm collecting ideas to prepare for future opportunities. It's definitely a process.
