I have a few students who are coming from a variety of home situations who come into the class each day unable to transition from mom/dad to school. What ideas do you have for transition activities for the first 30 minutes or so of the day?

Both of my daughter's preschool class and Kinder class this year start with children getting to "read" books until the bell rings or class time starts. Then there is Morning Check In - students get to give a thumbs up, down or in between for how they are feeling and then they can raise their hand and share one thing about that morning (or evening before). This is followed by routine things like: number of days of school, morning message, going over daily schedule.

maybe create a buddy system withing the classroom, or big brother/sister ideas. I would look at what colleges do for freshmen to get ideas and then structure it to Pre-K

          Thanks for the ideas!

I am starting to have an 8th grade "buddy" come into our class a few mornings a week to help with transitions. Lauren, I also allow kids to read/draw for the first 25 minutes of the morning as a settling in activity for the kids. It works well for most students, though some of are still struggling to say goodbye to their parents/transition into class.
