Working with science teachers and open response writing. They struggle to correct large numbers of papers but without feedback students aren't improving. Any suggestions?

Joanne- I work with the 7th grade science teacher on my team to complete open responses as well. Together we created a rubric and a checklist of what is wrong with the response. For example, there are about ten options such as, "Topic sentence doesn't relate to question," or "doesn't use enough domain-specific vocabulary." Also, we have the students highlight the response using a color code. Topic and conclusion sentences are yellow, the direct textual evidence is blue and explanation and analysis is in pink. By focusing on the pink and using the checklist, my partner is able to get through ORs quickly and students get feedback to revise the OR if they choose. It works out great!
