The great thing about the Common Core is that it is integrated and spirals from grade level to grade level. The PARRC testing group just came out with a document that outlines the shifts from grade to grade for all three types of writing. You can read about the major shifts that occur between grade 5 and 6 and this will give you a good idea about the skills they should already have, or need to develop, from grade 5.
Hope this helps!
