I am 4 (crazy!) weeks away from wrapping up my first year of a new kindergarten loop (I'll have most of my class back for first grade). What are some of your favorite ways/traditions/activities to wrap up a school year? We're doing an end of year party with families on the last day, but I am thinking in the week or so leading up to then...

I like the idea of favorite learning experience. I'll try that with my ELL students. It's great feedback for us.

My Kindergartens and I brainstorm our favorite activities from the year. A Walk and Talk method is helpful. Usually, I read through my daybook ahead of time so I have a few prompts if we need them. Later, using that list, we plan our last day together. Usually, some of the favorite activities are included and we get to do them one more time. Sometimes they choose activities that I wish they'd forgotten. For example, one year, they wanted to do our beginning-of-the-year gingerbread hunt. I was up past midnight baking the cookies. The Kindergartens' delight the next day made it all worthwhile.

This year I am letting my students plan their own activities and their end of the year party theme. It starts out as a writing activity where I set up white board 'parking lots' to post ideas of what they want to do on sticky notes. Afterward it is going to become a collaborative effort to work together in committees to brainstorm and plan to accomplish what they want to do.
