Question Detail

What do I do if I find myself bullying bullies?

Apr 11, 2013 10:40am

I have a knee-jerk reaction to aggressive, bullying behavior, which is to intimidate the child in return to defend the other child, perhaps even humiliating them. It is very counter-productive and I find I have many of the same lessons to learn as the bullies around self-control, even though I feel 'justified' at the time. I'm looking for more effective ways to engage with this scenario.

I have found that this works for me as an "in the moment" tactic- very calmly, ask the student to go stand outside the door for a moment (with the door open so you can see them if you have no windows). When you have the rest of the class settled and working, go outside and address them. This sends the message that it's not ok, while allowing you to preserve the dignity of that child.
