What does your coaching position look like?

Feb 7, 2014 10:12pm

I have a writing coach in my department and I want to make sure that we are maximizing her role. What does your coaching position look like? Do you model lessons, write curriculum, observe teachers? I'd love to know what other coaches are doing. Thanks!

Our coaches do a little of everything depending on the needs of the teachers. It really becomes an individualized plan because every teacher has a different perspective or entry point into the coaching cycle. For some it is needing affirmation, for others its having an opportunity to reflect aloud. I would say 90% of what we do is listen with guiding questions to help shift thinking to create positive changes. Generally we start with a classroom visit where we help out and get to know the class and teacher. We have a reflective discussion where the teacher can identify their desired support and outcomes. We plan an action together. It may be research, co-teaching, co-planning, visit other classrooms, or simply more time to talk. We utilize Marzano's Becoming a Reflective Teacher rubrics.
