Have you tried 7Steps? Developed by Maria Calderon, it's a very interactive and engaging way to teach tier 2 words. If you google 7 Steps for vocabulary, you will see the strategy. Also, I love the paint chips strategy here on TeachingChannel: https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/build-student-vocabulary
A strategy that I utilize is to hand the students a list of forbidden words (both most common and synonyms of my vocabulary words) as well as a list of required words (my vocab). Then I have them describe a process. I allow them prep time, so that they can put things in the proper context and then I either have them write or present to the class.
