Question Detail

What is an effective teacher of the gifted?

Jun 23, 2013 1:25pm

I have taught gifted students for 7 years. I am at a loss. I want to challenge them, however the regular classroom rigor is such that I feel they need a different outlet. These students need the opportunity to talk and socialize moreso than other students because of their uniqueness. I have been told I am not challenging enough, but no suggestions are given. Keep in mind, my students are intellectually gifted so they may have many strengths in one class with the possibility of no two strengths being the same. Also, I am not allowed (nor do I want ) to teach testing skills.
I am very creative and enjoy that end of the spectrum. I had an administrator (a friend I was asking for advice) tell me that we have reached the place where the students are being challenged on an academic level and that I should challenge them on a creative level. She said I should get them out of their comfort zone. This has intrigued me. I am on a crusade to make myself over. Please help.
