What is the difference between Common Core State Standards and essential standards?

My PLC group is struggling with the difference between the two along with creating appropriate formative and summative assessments. Language Arts is so broad it is hard to have a target every day to focus on.

      Hi Mary-

When designing instruction, focus on the Common Core standards for ELA. One great way to make sure you're covering all the standards is to outline a scope and sequence for the year and align it directly to the CCSS, so you know which standards to focus on each month. We did that in my district and it worked great. In the CCSS, all standards are essential for teaching a balanced literacy program, so we treat them all equally. One great place to find lessons that align to Common Core standards is the UDL Exchange, which includes universally designed lessons that meet multiple CCSS standards.

      Have a great day,
