What piece of advice would you give to a new language teacher in Colombia?

Mar 22, 2016 9:29am

I'm a new language teacher in Colombia. Although I like teaching, it's become really difficult for me to adapt to all the forms and processes we have to keep with students. I find difficult to be engaging and creative and playful with my students. Sometimes I feel they're not learning properly. I'm getting frustated and stressed.

Do not rush in the teaching, minimize the learning objectives.Use small role plays to engage the learners in conversations.Be very friendly with them.Try to use most at times audio-visual materials to support learning

When I find myself in a rut, I think back to when I was a student. What did I like? What would I have found interesting? Then I also look at my students. What are they into? Is there a topic of interest? Help them feel invested in the course and have a brainstorming session about an upcoming project. Plain and simple- If you are not comfortable (even enjoying) a lesson then it will show through. Remember why you became a teacher and have fun. It will be contagious!
