What teaching strategies work best to make sure students get their work done in class?

Some of our upper grade ( 5 and 6) classes make up packets that the students keep all week to complete in class. There is a huge amount of incomplete work or missing work. Is it better to hand out work daily?

It all goes back to objectives and goals. What are the objectives and goals of the packets? What do you want students to be able to do after they complete the packets? Is there any type of formative assessment? What does the teacher do while students do the packets? What standards do the packets address?

If there is a lot of incomplete work, maybe you should try reassessing the standards and goals of the class.
