What to expect when student teaching?

Jun 27, 2013 12:51am

I have worked as a preschool teacher for many years, but now I am completing my Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education and approaching my student teacher assignment for certification. I am curious as to what things I can expect as a student teacher?

I also loved my experience as a student teacher. The best way to learn is by doing, right?! I learned so much from the experience and it really gave me the confidence and experience I needed to be ready for teaching on my own. I also was lucky enough to have a student teacher in my classroom years later and that was a great experience too. In both cases, it was just as Katie described - start off slow with observations, collaboration, and by the end of the term I was completely in charge of everything - grading, lesson planning, writing tests, etc. for one period of a class (high school level). I encourage you to really embrace the experience and make the most of it - good luck!

        Ms. Novak,

We still have a "master" teacher but this entity is a composite of the teachers/admins/people we collaborate with. This is one of the reasons why I'm in this site. I love getting your ideas and other peoples' ideas. I must admit that I am a teacher that is always a work in progress but to answer T. Murdock, I would like to refer to this website:

It not only talks about what to expect as student or novice teachers but it offers some tips as well. Plus, venture out to a local B&N store and look through the profusion of materials/books on teaching. I wonder where these were when I was doing my practicum?
