World lit/ 10th What's your curriculum?

I teach 10th World literature. We currently HAVE an anthology which isn't used- not even used in the curriculum guide. We teach 4 units. Oedipus/Things Fall Apart/Nectar in A Sieve/Night. We are on A/B block schedule- so every other day for the year. With CCSS- I know the focus will be closer examination and less focus on novels. So im looking at what others are teaching. We will be getting a new curriculum (supposedly) but not until August at our back to school meetings before school starts and I'd like to start looking now. Thanks!

      I'm also in block schedule. Also teach sophomores. Haven't taught any of those specific novels, but did teach novels using different methods the students could use without me having to lecture too much. I had a five minute section of each class called "speed talk" where I posed a question related to theme as it related to the real world, then set a timer and let them talk. I used blogging in roughly the same way--I'd pose a question, then have them respond to me and one another.

        Ran out of room--
        I've also had huge success with debate as a teaching method--showing them how to research, posing a thematic question, then having them take a pro or con position and argue it...they then have to write an essay--using the research they pulled, the arguments they made and heard, etc. I also use "article of the week" to tie in to the theme and teach annotation, summary, and text relationship skills. The AoW can be about theme or the actual book, or the information about the author as an intorductory set. I use alot of video clips to help students "see" what I'm seeing-many times running videos from here so they can see the model.

          I also teach 10th grade and have switched to the use of CCSS. I noticed that you noted "less focus on novels" in your post. I have seen success in my class by setting up each unit with an essential question that students will answer in essay format at its conclusion. We read short stories, poems, and look at other media during class time that can all be applied to answering the question. Students can choose between two novels that I supply to read on their own. They are then required to cite evidence from their novel in addition to what we have discussed in class when they write their essay. For example, in my "What makes a survivor?" unit, students have the choice of reading The Lord of the Flies or Night. This semester, I even had a few students come to me with their own suggestions and ended up with a few reading The Glass Castle. In this unit, we focus on the short story "To Build a Fire"and read/watch some survivor stories from the tv series "I Shouldn't Be Alive".

            I like several of these suggestions. Thanks for answering. I enjoy reading how other people do things and looking for new innovative ideas. Now to get my students doing the reading on their own!!

              Oedipus, Nectar in a Sieve, and Night are usually taught in 9th grade in Fairfax County. In the schools I've worked in, we've read Julius Caesar, Lord of the Flies, Things Fall Apart, Fahrenheit 451, Antigone, various international memoirs. We haven't adopted Common Core in Virginia, so I'm not sure whether these pieces would align with those standards. You might want to talk to people who teach IB courses; they're usually full of good ideas for international authors/titles.
