Our district has placed' writing an opinion piece in the first nine weeks. I am at a loss on how to do this with first graders who are learning to read at this point let alone write an opinion piece. Help!

The In Common texts are very helpful. But if you are working to get primary students to write, I would also spend time on speaking and listening. Give them the prompt: who was your favorite character in the book? what was the most interesting part of the story? what lesson did the characters learn? Next step, let them rehearse for writing by talking with a partner: 2 minutes each or some such measured time. Next step, let them draw their ideas. Next step, write or dictate. Too many times, we forget about thinking that goes into forming an opinion just for the sake of getting the writing on paper. Hope these ideas help.
