Writing for third graders...help!

Jun 24, 2013 11:04am

Our writing program is really weak at our school. Does anyone have good resources or ideas for teaching writing to third graders? I have to start the year with making sure they know what a sentence is because many don't understand the concept. They simply know it starts with a capital and ends with a period. I have to get them from there to multiple paragraphs by the end of the year!
I do well with expository writing, but personal narratives and fictional narratives (especially using dialogue) are difficult for me to break down and teach. At suggestions would be great!

Using examples in literature and having the kids look for examples in published work is powerful. How do writers do this? When do they use dialogue or why? Have the students analyze how the skill is used in authentic writing. Then use student writing to critique. What did the student do well? How could he/she improve?
Lucy Calkins has some great videos on how to teach writing.
      Hope that helps,
