Drumming Up Attention
Lesson Objective: Get students' attention using a drumbeat
All Grades / All Subjects / Attention

Thought starters

  1. Why do you think Ms. Bailey finds this more effective than a verbal signal?
  2. How would you teach this attention getting signal to your classes?
  3. Notice how the signal prepares students for important information or a transition.?

Great use... I have used a rain stick during the day to gather attention....the students would know it was time to regroup when they would hear the " rain"

Agreed--this is easy and effective. Also best to coach others that this is kind of transition should be rare so students aren't desensitized to it.

great idea! thanks for sharing. our school has open classrooms so I would have to train other classes to ignore my signals and of course check with my colleagues. However, even though we try to work quietly with respect for this open plan, this does not always happen!! It is also a high school (last 3 years) BUT I have found that even these senior students enjoy this kind of thing. You have given me something to think about...many thanks
