It's great, just like when people dive, they also use silent signals to express themselves in the sea.

I like the simplicity of the signals and giving the students a sense of control over their education.

Interesting and cuts down on the verbal exchanges which the students might feel is has a negative connotation.

I really liked then silent hand signals. The fact that she said that the signals were campus wide was shocking to me. Just think for a minute the amount of time we as teachers stop for interruptions. Crazy huh. But this teacher showed us that their are ways that we can effectively communicate with each other silently. Like most responses i read, some students have a tough time voicing their opinions out loud or admitting that they are unsure about something. These exercised encourage the students when they are stuck and show whether or not if a student understands what is being taught. This is a lot better than someone getting flustered and blurting out that they are lost or do not get it. The fact that everyone is in tune with this technique is amazing. It also keeps from other students being distracted from potential outbursts. This is definitely something to look into.
