@Tamara I would actually reverse that, "Building a community is a very important part of classroom management." Building a community of learners is paramount and classroom management techniques may be needed to serve that purpose. But, surely community is more important than management in our classrooms our approaches should reflect that.

When you walk into a room where people are happy to see you- it just makes you want to participate and interact! If you walk in and they look over and make a face and say something like, "Oh you're here today." you start off with an attitude. Now my students try to beat me welcoming other classmates when they enter. They smile, call their name out, and give friendly reminders like- "Don't forget to get your folder out." Even the grumpy non-morning people break through with a little grin when they come in the room. I say, "I'm glad you came today. Put your things away, and you table friends can help you figure out what our morning work is, or you can bring it over to me and I will help get you started." Jones, Megeata
