Wow! I applaud your method of student involvement and self discovery of the hypotenuse and relating it to the real world using the golf analogy! I also love the reinforcement via the CLUE game murder mystery. Excellent way to keep the class engaged and incorporate technology via texting! Well done!

My co-teacher and I modeled this lesson in our math class this morning. We could see the light bulbs clicking on all over the room. It was great! In the very first activity, where the students are supposed to either draw a triangle to scale or use 6, 8, and 10 to write an equation, I suggest that teachers do not use 6, 8, and 10. Several students in our class wrote 10 = sqrt(6x6) + sqrt(8+8). These students, who could not understand why their method would not in all cases, remained confused during much of the lesson. Next time we teach the lesson, we will change the numbers to 3, 4, 5 or use a different Pythagorean Triple.
